Father Simon was awarded 160 acres of land in Dixon, Illinois in 1847 due to 1842 Act of Congress providing Bounty Land Grants to veterans of the War of 1812 (grandfather Nathaniel was in 6th US Infantry). The family moved from Jefferson County, New York and was settled in Dixon by 1850 when Hiram was 13 years old. He died in Clinton, Iowa and was buried at the family cemetary in Fenton, IL.
