1969 T34 Ownership History
As documented by fourth owner, October 2008

Four Owners & 58,700 Original Miles:

  • Klaus Hafner from Darmstadt Germany owned it from 1969-1983 and drove 40K miles over 14 years
  • Jurgen Sauerwein from Ober-Ramstadt Germany owned it from only April-September 1983 and drove 2K miles over 5 months
  • Hagen Hoeffer from Mainhausen Germany owned it from 1983-1998 and drove 13K miles over 15 years
  • Steve Odom exported it from Germany to Mississippi USA in 1998 then moved to Orcas Island, Washington in 2008, and drove it only 4000 miles over 10 years

39 Years of Documented History:

14 April 1969: Rolled out from the Karmann factory in Osnabruck, Germany.
17 April 1969: First licensed to a Volkswagen garage "Autohaus Sudhessen Wieser OHG" in Darmstadt Germany, 20 miles south of Frankfurt/Main. The car was used as a demonstration car for the dealership for two months. License number: DA-DJ 524 (DA stands for Darmstadt).
20 June 1969: The car was bought by it's original owner, Professor Klaus Hafner PhD, from Darmstadt. The T34 was the most expensive Volkswagen in Germany in this time.
24 June 1981: Twelve years later the T34 was taken out of service.
Spring 1983: Second owner, Jurgen Sauerwein from Ober-Ramstadt (close to Darmstadt), bought the car from Prof. Hafner. Jurgen did minor repairs and painted it to get the car licensed again.
07 June 1983: The old "Kraftfahrzeugbrief" (registration document) was replaced by a new one.
09 June 1983: The car received a new license plate. License number: DA-A 9184.
15 September 1983: Third owner, Hagan Hoeffer, bought the T34 and licensed it to his father, Gunter Hoefer. New license plate number: OF-SR 445 (OF stands for Offenbach which is near the small town of Mainhausen, 20 miles east of Frankfurt/Main). Mileage in 1983: 68,000 km (42,250 miles).
September 1984: Repair of the brake system because of a leak at the brake cylinder.
December 1984: The original engine broke down, and the replacement was an original rebuilt one from the Volkswagenwerk factory.
January 1985: Hagen had driven the T34 for 17,000 km (10,500 miles) and his mother had driven it on her short rides shopping. There were no problems except the windscreen wipers were replaced because of damage in stormy weather.
December 1991: At the obligatory inspection check-up (every two years in Germany) the T34 was not relicensed because rust was discovered on the right rocker panel.
February 1992: The T34 was taken out of service and from then on it was stored in a dry place and given only minor attention for 6 years.
September 1998: Minor repairs were made, battery & starter were replaced, and it was then sold to its fourth owner, Steve Odom from Mississippi USA. Mileage was 89,000 km (55,300 original miles). T34 was shipped from Germany to Florida in October.
November 1998: T34 was trailered from Jacksonville Florida to Hattiesburg Mississippi.
January 1999 to October 2008: Refurbish dash by removing old paint, repainting Cypress Green, and installing an original wood-grain dash cover (from a 1967 T34 from Munich). Gauges restored by Foreign Speedo in San Diego CA ($200) in 2002. Cleaned seats, front and back, by removing from car and detailing with a toothbrush and cleaner. Painstakingly cleaned dash pads. Replaced master cylinder. Rebuilt both carburetors and replaced idle cut-off valves. Purchased rocker panel replacement set (six pieces) from Lars Neuffer in Germany in 1999 ($900). Purchased model-specific Blaupunkt T34 radio from Lars Neuffer in Germany. Purchased various spare T34 parts, literature, & toys (rebuilt door hinges, window winder, vent window frames, NOS muffler with installation kit, head light ring, service manuals, set of rebuilt carbs from England, six T34 toy cars, a T34 wall clock, english owner's manual, german owner's manual, VW parts books, T34 blueprint, foglight bulbs, & lower dash pad). Cleaned vinyl mats in front & rear luggage compartments. Removed and refurbished gas tank with POR-15 sealer inside tank and POR-15 on outside of tank. While gas tank was out, replaced steering damper. Removed weather stripping from front trunk channel and painted channel with POR-15. Cleaned spare tire well and painted with POR-15. Complete brake job ($750) by European brake specialist in August 2008.
16 October 2008: transported from Seattle WA to San Diego CA to PureT34 Consignments to find its next caretaker.
25 October 2008: arrived in San Diego with 58,745 original miles
